One day in a room not far away from you, some dudes were all hangin' out trying to write a story for their tv show.

"It's not fair!" cried Josh scratching his butt, "I can't think of anything to write!"

Todd burped.

Dave looked up from his slightly wrinkled, yet crusty mag from which he was trying to gather story ideas. "I know dude!" he whined, picking at the spots on his face.

Todd took a swig of cherry coke, swallowed and burped for 30 seconds.

Josh looked at him. "Dude! that's awesome!"

Todd bowed. And farted.

They all applauded.

After the excitement had died down, Dave resumed his (I'd call it perusal but Dave didn't know the word existed) reading of his magazine, soon he drifted off to sleep. Josh continued to stare into the distance.

Suddenly Josh leapt to his feet. Startled by his sudden movement, Dave's head shot up his magazine still attached to his cheek. He and Todd looked at each other with alarm on their faces. Josh wasn't known for his sudden movements.

"Dude?" Dave asked, peeling the magazine off his face and pulling ten spot heads with it.

Josh was standing, shaking with rage, glaring at the pen in his hand.

"It's the pen!" he raged. "This pen is the reason why I can't think of anything to write!" He threw it across the room, narrowly avoiding Todd's left ear.

Todd said nothing. And burped.

Josh strode to the door. "That pen is fired!" He shouted as he opened the door. "I need a new pen!" He strode about the room, muttering, "Yes" he shouted in triumph. "It was the pen! I need my old pen!"

"But dude" said Dave (Dave said dude a lot because too much time alone with his magazines had left him with the inability to remember anything, let alone anyone's name), "Your old pen ran out remember?"

"It doesn't matter!" said Josh, "I loved that pen. It was my special Super-Barbie pen! I've got to have it back! Everything will be okay."

Soon Josh's old pen was returned to him. Josh sat down happily at the table with it and wrote his name a couple of times on the paper in front of him. The pen kept running out but he was happy.

Dave went back to his happy crusty and wrinkly magazine world.

Todd burped.

And all was well again.

Wandered into the Fandom Pit of Vipers today, also known as Gateworld, because I had a cold and I was bored.

Wished I'd never bothered.

Firstly, I don't really watch Atlantis anymore and I don't intend to either. Given the way that PTB speak about their fans I'm not inclined to. It's my basic human right to actually not want to watch. So going to GW was like looking at a car crash.. as I heard the usual whines of "give it a chance". Oh fuck off please. Let people NOT WATCH!

Secondly, the usual suspects were out and about acting according to character. How disappointing. Nothing new there. Then I accidently came across some of my "favourite" posters posts. It's not even that I disagree with what they have to say, it's just the sheer puerility of their writing. It's like watching.. somebody dribbling.

Ack... What an exercise in sheer futility.

See Joe has updated his blog again. This time he attempts to move us away from being shrill, illinformed we're frothing beserkers. I'm sorry Joe, but I like being a shrill lemming and nothing you say is going to disaude me from being such..

For those who are interested here is the relevant part of his latest entry:

"Speaking of grousing, I couldn’t help but notice that certain remarks in yesterday’s blog have engendered a rising tide of frothing fan fury. Some accuse me of hating the fans, the forums, anyone holding a negative opinion of the shows. In their, dare I say it, lemming-like stampede rush to hysterical judgment, they failed to take one tiny thing into account: what I actually wrote. Even though the quote has found its way onto the various forums, no one has bothered to actually read it, caught up as they are in the intoxicating frenzy of mass berserker rage. To refresh your memories, I wrote: “I considered joining some online fan forum and joining the chorus blaming the producers for her sudden disappearance (…) but ultimately decided against it because I realized it would only make me sound like a shrill and ill-informed lemming.” To spell it out for you: individuals who point the finger and assign blame based on nothing more than their gut instinct are ignorant at best, cretins at worst. And those who chime in with them fare not much better. Sorry, nothing there about fans who are unhappy with the show or those who criticize the show or those who frequent forums or fans in general. Specifically, and quite clearly, I was referring to the self-anointed know-it-alls. That said, don’t let me stop any other fans who don’t fall into said group from feeling any less victimized. If you want to feel persecuted for no good reason, by all means go for it. After all, there’s nothing more satisfying than a good mob rage. (Ultimately, I’m sure this won’t change many minds. Joining together with like-minded individuals in a screaming chorus of blue murder is a heck of a lot easier than admitting you’ve made a mistake.)"

Now, I've only taken part in the Shrill and Illinformed Lemmings Thread on Gateworld which actually has the best fun I've had in fandom for ages. I've seen nothing about mob rage there, just people a bit pissed at being insulted (and he meant to insult fandom in his first post make no mistake, he just tried to put it "cleverly" so he could have a cop-out). We've also had a lot of fun on that thread.

I can't see how he could possibly think I was mistaken in saying the writing of Atlantis is poor. But then what would I know? I've only read Dostoesvky and Camus recently, clearly I'm no judge.

Anyway, I don't want this blog to be an anti-Joe M blog. I've had my say and I'm quite happy, however, I do like having fun with my fandom otherwise I get bored. But comment away!

Dear Joe...

Once upon a time, while forming ideas about a new TV show called Stargate Atlantis, some writers thought it would be cool to have a mature woman running the aforementioned Atlantis, because “you know dude. That would be, like, cool.” They also planned to have their male lead character in conflict with the female character because then they might be able to exorcise their mother issues.

So they wrote a character called Elizabeth Weir, made her in her late 30s.

But they forgot they lacked the ability to get into any character’s shoes that didn’t relate directly to any life experience they had. Since, life experience to them consisted of being men, and young men at that, it meant that the only characters they were able to write consistently were young men.

Certainly not women in their late 30s. Especially as the actress contracted to play Elizabeth Weir showed a potential in depth and range in acting that would allow this character to develop. In addition, unfortunately her chemistry with the male lead did not result in the expected conflict.

So the character languished until finally and perhaps because her presence actually highlighted the lack in their writing ability, they decided to reduce her role to a state where they might be able to comfortably handle it. And thus it was so.

Young men also like… explosions. They like hot girls and breasts. Even the hot girl they put into the show however, proved a challenge, as the writers discovered beyond looking at the hot girl they really didn’t have much of a clue how to write her either. But that was okay, because being the hot girl didn’t (a) expose their lack of talent and (b) but hot girls that stand around being hot don’t prove threatening to their view of the world.

And you’re telling me that I don’t know anything Joe? Well, actually I do. And thank god I didn’t waste my money on Atlantis DVDs.

I've often wondered about the plethora of AUs that exist for Stargate Atlantis. Could this constant re-imaging be because we have some very good actors acting in a tv show that basically is shite?
